Feminista Film Fórum, 5. alkalom: SÜLT ZÖLD PARADICSOM (angolul, magyar felirattal)

Augusztus 3-án megint találkozunk, ezúttal a SÜLT ZÖLD PARADICSOM című filmet nézzük meg. Az 1991-es két nő barátságát meséli el, akik 1930-as évek gazdasági válságának idején vendéglőt nyitnak a mélyen konzervatív Alabama államban. A másik történetszál egy generációkon átívelő barátság kibontakozását követi nyomon egy idősotthon lakója és egy fiatalabb, sivár házasságában elnyomott életet élő nő között; utóbbinak végül ez a barátság ad erőt ahhoz, hogy saját kezébe vegye az életét. A két történet pedig összekapcsolódik…

A Feminista Film Fórum, könyvtárunk legfrissebb kezdeményezése, amin szeretettel várunk mindenkit kortárs és klasszikus filmeket nézni, majd megbeszélni “genderszemüvegen” keresztül. Célunk az, hogy sokszínű, nemzetközi dokumentum- és játékfilmek segítségével képezzük magunkat és közösségünket feminista és LMBTQI témákból: történelem, gondolkodásmód, aktivizmus, művészet, stb.

A filmeket lehetőség szerint magyar felirattal vagy szinkronnal vetítjük, hogy olyanok is csatlakozhassanak hozzánk, akik nem beszélnek folyékonyan angolul. Noha ez az elején lehet, hogy egy kicsit korlátozni fogja a filmkínálatot, hosszú távon szeretnénk a saját feliratainkat elkészíteni bizonyos filmekhez (különös tekintettel a dokumentumfilmekre, amiket nem látni TV-ben vagy moziban). Ebben bárki lelkes érdeklődő segítségét örömmel fogadjuk!

A Film Fórumot kéthetente, szombatonként tartjuk a Közkincs Könyvtárban. A vetítést este 7-kor kezdjük, a filmnézést pedig beszélgetés és teázás követi. Ha szeretnéd felfedezni a könyvgyűjteményünket, nyugodtan gyere kicsit korábban!

Azokat a résztvevőket, akik (még) nem iratkoztak be a könyvtárba, arra kérjük, hogy lehetőség szerint 300-700 Ft adománnyal járuljanak hozzá a programhoz.

Join us this Saturday on 3 August to enjoy and discuss the comedy-drama FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, a 1991 film that tells the story of the friendship between two women who start a cafe in the conservative state of Alabama in the 1930s. The other narrative thread follows the developing cross-generational friendship between an old lady in a nursing-home and a younger woman living an oppressed life in a loveless marriage; and how this friendship gradually empowers her to change and take control of her life. The two stories turn out to be connected….

The Library’s latest initiative, the Feminist Film Forum, invites you to come and watch contemporary and classic films with us, and then discuss them from a gender perspective. Our aim is to educate ourselves about the myriad inventive ways that feminist and LGBTQI ideas, history, activism and art have become part of every country’s culture with a wide variety of documentaries and feature films from many countries.

English-language films will have Hungarian subtitles wherever possible, as we want them to be accessible to visitors who have not yet had the opportunity to acquire fluent English. Hungarian films, or those with Hungarian audio, will of course have English subtitles! Although this may limit our choice of films at first, our long-term project is to provide our own subtitles for all the films we think are important (especially the documentaries, which are rarely shown in cinemas or on TV). Anyone who would like to help us do so is very welcome!

The Film Forum will take place every two weeks on Saturday evenings in the Közkincs Könyvtár Community Library. The films will start at 19h, and will be followed by discussion and plenty of tea! Feel free to come a bit earlier to browse our wonderful book collection.

We request that participants who are not already library members contribute between 300-700 HUF, as they can. Thank you all for your support, and we look forward to seeing you!

Július 21-én megint találkozunk, ezúttal Marjane Satrapi és Vincent Paronnaud PERSEPOLIS c. filmjét fogjuk megnézni és megbeszélni. A Satrapi azonos című, bestseller képregényéből készült 2007-es, díjnyertes film a forradalom előtti és utáni Iránban és Európában játszódik. A történet nyomon követi, ahogy Satrapi kisgyerekből lázadó, punkimádó tinivé cseperedik Iránban – a fiatal Marjane egy harcos, kekeckedő, kendőt viselő marxista-anarchista, aki lenyűgöző szarkazmussal fogadja minden ellentmondásosságát. A háttér a 70-es, 80-as évek Iránjának egyre feszültebb politikai légköre, amiben mindennapossá válik a másképp gondolkodók bebörtönzése vagy kivégzése, és ami végül a borzalmas iraki-iráni háborúban csúcsosodik ki.

Feminist Film Forum Vol. 4: PERSEPOLIS (in Hungarian with English subtitles)

Hello, library community!

On July 21st we meet again, this time to watch and discuss PERSEPOLIS, a 2007 film written and directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud. The award-winning film is based on Satrapi’s best-selling graphic novel of the same title about her life in pre- and post-revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. The film traces Satrapi’s growth from child to rebellious, punk-loving teenager in Iran – young Marjane is a stroppy, piss-taking, veil-wearing Marxist-anarchist who embraces her many contradictions with admirable sarcasm. In the background are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal-leaning family detained and then executed, leading up to the disastrous Iran/Iraq war.

The streets of Hungary’s capital are far from quiet these days, but not with the usual tourists or holiday buzz. The people of Hungary are out to participate in nightly rallies, to stand in the cold against the tyrannical reign of the government. For the first time in over a dozen years pepper spray and tear gas have burned the throats and eyes of the citizens of Budapest. Citizen protesters as well as members of Parliament have been arrested, abused and silenced by the State through their police force.

This is a moment of incredible potential and grave danger for the people of Hungary, especially for those already targeted and oppressed here such as women, LGBTQI community members, those experiencing homelessness and ethnic minorities. As the streets fill with righteous anger we are seeing mobilization of the far right- Jobbik has promised to bring thousands of supporters from the rural areas to Budapest and extreme nationalists are present in the nightly crowd. Ensuring that these groups do not gain traction and that they are prevented from committing acts of violence against any of their usual targets must be a top priority of the members and leaders of the movement so far. The movement- I use this word for lack of a better one and with faith that these actions and coalitions will fulfill the expectations embedded in the term.

Since November there have been mass mobilizations of different interest groups who have taken to the streets for a variety of reasons such as academic freedom, workers’ rights, judicial independence and the freedom of the press. As more and more people and groups have joined the protests the crowd has become increasingly incongruous with sightings of anarchists’ flags flying next to those of far-right groups, hammer and sickle flags beside Trump signs, chants of “Trianon” and “Hungaria” followed in the next breadth by rounds of the International. The only thing everyone apparently agrees on is that Orban is a ‘geci’ (literally translates to cum but means something like scumbag) and a list of 5 demands put forward by the opposition parties. From this chaotic mess of ideology there have emerged several promising coalitions- students from universities around the city created a Student Trade Union, 16 Unions have voted to strike in January and there is more cooperation between opposition parties now than was until now thought possible.

Now more than ever the representation of and solidarity between minority and marginalized groups must be kept within focus and at the forefront of every action for there can be no real social change without this. There is a real threat of elements of the far right in Hungary leaping at this chance to further their already-too-powerful position, a threat which must be taken seriously and thwarted at every turn. We cannot trade Fidesz for Jobbik- one tyranny for another.

The movement and the future of Hungary must be inclusive, centered around those most vulnerable to social unrest in a country with a long history of sexism, homo-/trans- phobia, antisemitism and racism. Without this consciousness at its core and at the front of the march there will be no revolution, only a transfer of power between deeply oppressive regimes.
